Meizu Technology Co., Ltd. is China-based electronic company founded in 2003 and is based in Zhuhai, Guangdong. School dropout Jack Wong founded it. In the beginning, the primary focus of the company was in the manufacture of MP3 Players and later MP4 Players. But from 2008 company’s focus shifted to smartphones. Officially Meizu released its first smartphone in April 2007 Meizu M8. This smartphone was highly praised for its performance, sound quality, and attractive prices. It was the first phone having featured with the capacitive touchscreen. It sold over 20 million units of smartphones in 2015 and also the 11th largest manufacturer of smartphones in the world. Alibaba invested $590 million in Meizu in February 2015.

Meizu is again back with the affordable and stylish phone. Meizu M5 has the fantastic design with the metallic body; rounded edges offers the comfortable grip and curved edge glass of 2.5D. It has a pleasing look from the front with the screen borders not so thick. As usual the earpiece, front camera, and LED notification light are in the same place as other phones of Meizu. There is a physical home button on the front bottom of the screen with the fingerprint sensor built-in. The speakers, the charging port, and a headphone port are placed on the lower side, while volume up-down and power button are on right side of the Smartphone. The hybrid SIM slot is on the left side of the device.
Meizu M5 is powered by Meizu’s Flyme OS 5, which is based on Android 6.0 Marshmallow, and octa-core MediaTek MT6750 SoC processor. There is no clarity by Meizu on the future Android update. The device has the display size of 5.2 inches with full HD resolutions. But the colors are bit dull. It is 4G compatible device but does not support voLTE. The APN cellular settings has to be manually entered for mobile data work, but no calling on 4G. It got only average points on the Benchmark performance, which are 40,042 on AnTuTu and 20fps on GFXbench. It does not have the Google Play Store app pre-installed; one has to install it from Hot Apps app manually.
Meizu M5 comes in two variants of the memory with 2 GB RAM, 16 GB storage and 3 GB RAM, 32 GB storage. The memory is expandable via microSD card (uses SIM 2).
Meizu M5 features with the rear camera of 13 Megapixels with a f/2.2 aperture, LED flash and PDAF. Focusing is quick, but the whites tend to bloom quickly, and Light metering isn’t the best either of the camera. Color reproduction is also poor in low light. The front camera is 5 Mega Pixels which also suffers in low light. On the other hand camera app is well designed with shooting mode, effects and toggle switches for flash and timer. It also includes GIF and panorama mode.
The other connectivity features available in the device are dual-band Wi-Fi a/b/g/n, GPS, Bluetooth 4.1, USB-OTG and 3.5 mm jack. There is no FM radio available in this device. The sensors available are fingerprint, compass, and accelerometer. But there is no gyroscope sensor.
The battery size of the device is 3070mAh, which has delivered 10 hours and 17 minutes on HD video loop test, which is good. There is no fast charging support in this device.
The Meizu M5 price in India would be around Rs 7000 for 16 GB model and Rs 9499 for 32 GB model. According to the Meizu M5 Review, it is falling back in overall performance as compared to Xiaomi Redmi 4.
